Another aid worker killed in Jaffna
Sathyamoorthy Selvaruban (25), a project coordinator for Sewalanka, undertaking tsunami reconstruction work was shot and killed at his home in Jaffna on 2 September. His mother, Thangaratnam (58) was also killed by the gunmen. Selvaruban’s wife Sobana sustained injuries. Kajaruban, young relative who was at home, suffered mental trauma was admitted to mental hospital.
Sewalanka is a national non-governmental organization that receives funding from the GoSL to undertake aid work. The killing of Selvaruban an employee of Sewalanka adds to the growing attack on aid agencies in the Northeast. It is of great concern that the international media is unable or unwilling to report on the vast majority of the murders of civilians taking place in the Northeast. For example the table below lists 53 civilian murders in the Northeast during the last week. Most of them were not reported in the international media. Even if the culprit is difficult to identify, the fact that they are all politically motivated murders is not in doubt. Is it not worth reporting that such a large number of politically motivated murders of civilians are taking place week after week?
