The Sri Lankan State "truthful" media
The Sri Lankan State media, Daily News of 26 May 2006, in its front page carried the photo below with the caption,
“Training for LTTE child recruits: A child-recruit being given military training by a member of the LTTE at LTTE camp in Kilinochchi”. Here is the real description of the photo, Recently, LTTE has been active giving self defense training to the people. These training are given in public sports grounds in the villages. Invariably children come to watch. Boys being boys are always fascinated by the guns. The boy in the photo is trying to grab the gun from the LTTE member’s hand, while the member is holding onto to it tight. That is boys all over the world. The other adult in the photo is Mr Thiagaraja, member of the LTTE Child Protection Unit. He is also the Head of the Liaison Office of the LTTE which is in constant contact with UNICEF and other international agencies concerning child protection. The two children in the front are indeed Thiagaraja's own two sons. Such is the “well informed truthfulness” of the Sri Lankan State media. Is it any wonder that the southern polity in Sri Lanka is totally out of tune with the reality in the Northeast? How then can the people fed with such “well informed truthful” stories elect a government that is meant to resolve the problems facing the people of the Northeast?
