Civilians in fear of white van abductions again
Nadarasa Surendran (22), Shanmugam Ariyan (21) and Kandasamy Mohanraj (22) were abducted from their village by gunmen who came in a white van in Paddiyadychenai on Sunday, 16 July around 12.00 am. Residents of the area stated that the village is overcome with fear.
White van abductions and killings were frequent during the months of December 2005 and January 2006 in Batticaloa and Jaffna and are now resurfacing. In many of the incidents, such as the latest in Paddiyadychenai and the abduction of the TRO employees on 29 and 30 January, the gunmen in the white vans travel through GoSL controlled areas that are highly secured by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA), and freely pass through SLA checkpoints. The SLA’s complicity has been further revealed in past incidents in which residents have witnessed the SLA standing guard outside of a home when gunmen in white vans attack civilians. The abduction of Sivasothy Thivyathas on 10 April 2006 in Uduvil, Jaffna and the killings of three women in Manipay, Jaffna on 15 January 2006 were typical incidents in which attacks were carried out with white vans.
