Murder, disappearance, assault, eviction, and sexual harassment by SLA

Son shot dead, Father injured in Jaffna

Thevarasa Mariathas (25) and his father S Thevarasa (51) were shot by two men on a motorbike at 4.30 pm on Saturday, 15 April, at a shop in Katkovalam in Point Pedro in Jaffna. Mariathas died on the spot and his father was seriously injured.

Four young men assaulted by SLA

On Saturday, 15 April, four young men, two cleaners and two welders, were returning home after work through the Ariyakulam bus stand in Jaffna town. The SLA stationed in the camp nearby stopped the young men and assaulted them badly. Later they made them stand on their knees for one hour before letting them go.

SLA threatens residents in Jaffna to vacate their homes

SLA is visiting residents in Valalai in Achchiveli in Jaffna threatening them to vacate their homes. This region is inside the Palaly High Security Zone and the SLA wants the residents to vacate for their own safety with no concern for the residents right to live in their own home.

Sexual harassment of young women by SLN

Public traveling to the islets off Jaffna peninsula are subjected to body search by the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) at the Kurikadduvan harbour area. During the checking the SLN chats to the young women in sexually harassing language. Lately young women are reporting that the SLN conduct has deteriorated and their harassments have become physical.

Police in Jaffna refuse to accept people’s complaints

Police in Jaffna are turning away the public who come to the police stations to lodge complaints. Police are telling the public that since the SLA is handling even civilian matters they should lodge their complaints with the SLA. People, however, fear lodging complaints with the SLA, since SLA is seen as an enemy of the public in Jaffna.
