
Family of six attacked in Mesaalai Jaffna
On Sunday 14 May, scores of men came to the door of the home of Kumaralingam in Kerniyadi in Meesalai in Jaffna around 9.00 pm. With the knowledge of the on going death squad style killings by the Sri Lankan military the family, parents and four adult daughters, tried hard to hold the doors shut with their weight The intruders attacked the door with axes.
The family on the other side of the door was badly hurt by knives and sharp wires that the attackers used to hit the family through the gap below the door. The attackers managed to break open the door and started to attack all six the members of the family with knives and sharp wires. The family members were also hit with the butt of the guns and kicked with the boots. When the attackers left, all but the mother had to be rushed to the hospital. The most critically injured is the father Kumaralingam (59). One of the daughters Vijayakala (25) is a third year university student. Another daughter Selvanithi (28) works in the Zonal Division of the Department of Education. In other words she is a government employee. The other two daughters who were badly injured are Umathevi (31) and Ratnalogini (33). The SLA and paramilitary arrived at the family home in three troop carriers. Family heard them speak in Sinhala and in Tamil with Sinhala accent. Family is terrified to talk to anyone about the incident. Trincomalee News On 17 May at 1.20 am in the morning (midnight) Sri Lankan army and paramilitary threw grenades into the home of Jeyamalar Sakthikumar located at Kovilady, Thampalakamam in Trincomalee. Jeyamalar was killed in the grenade attack. She is 31 years old. On 16 May 2006, morning Sri Lankan army opened fire in Potkerni in Thampalakamam. Thevi Balasundaram (45) was injured in the firing. On 16 May 2006, at 6.20 am Sri Lankan army opened fire from their Kaddaiparichchan camp in Muthur, Trincomalee into the LTTE area. In the firing Alageswarai Sivagnanasundaram (40) of 5th Ward Senaiyoor was injured.
