Violence and harassment in Northeast

Man shot and injured in Trincomalee

A young man, Suthahar, from Sivapuram village in Seruvil area, was injured when unidentified persons opened fire in Kinniya in Trincomalee, 7 Kms from Trincomalee town.

Staff of a non-governmental organization that happens to be passing the area during the incident took the injured man to Trincomalee hospital. The location of the incident comes within the Uppuveli police division.

SLMM went to the location of the incident to investigate. They also visited the injured man at the hospital and conducted an investigation.

Young man abducted by paramiliaries in Jaffna found with severe injuries

Thevaraja Vimalanathan (26) from Elalai in Jaffna was abducted by three armed paramilitaries on Thursday night at 11.00 pm.

He was taken to the to the Koththiyan cemetery in Chunnakam and there he was attacked with swords by the three armed men who abducted him. The armed men escaped after the attack. The abducted young man managed to take himself to the Chunnakam police station Valigamam. The next day, on Froday, he was admitted to the Jaffna hospital.

University students subjected to harassment at Muhamalai checkpoint by SLA

Jaffna University students going to Jaffna from Vanni for their final year lectures are subjected to harassment at the Muhamalai border checkpoint by SLA.

Many Jaffna university students shifted to Vanni due to halting of lectures at the University following the violence in December and January. After the decision to restart the lectures for the final year students some of the students have started to move back to Jaffna with their books and clothes. These students are subjected to long delays in the pretext of checking at Muhamalai. They are also questioned in a threatening manner.

Students have expressed frustration and anger at the way they are treated at the checkpoint.
