SLA attempts to empty Mutur of all Tamils
Since the end of May six Tamil civilians have been abducted by GoSL operated forces in the same area of Mutur, Trincomalee. Of the six civilians, two were later found dead and the others are strongly suspected to have been killed. The Mutur area, in which the Mutur jetty ferry crossing is located, is surrounded by the Kaddiparichchan, Thoppur and Mutur SLA checkpoints.
Abducted
Subramanian Suthakar, 25 (1 July)
Suntharalingam Ravichandran, 24 (28 May)
Mathavarasa Sathanandan, 26 (26 May)
T Chandran (23 May)
Abducted and killed
Chellaih Varnakulasingam, 55 (28 June)
Selvarajah Gajanathan (1 June)
The Sri Lankan army (SLA) has also been artillery shelling civilian areas in the LTTE area of Mutur East. Since April, Mutur, and Sampoor, have been shelled on numerous occasions from sea and land, the latest attack on Saturday 1 July. In this attack, several civilian homes were damaged. Beginning at 1.00 am, more than 50 artillery shells were fired into civilian areas. The shelling resumed at about 5.30 p.m. for about two hours. Thousands of Mutur residents have been displacing to schools, churches and other safer areas. Attempts to send relief to the displaced families have been blocked by the SLA, as was the case on 28 April. The consistent targeting of Tamil civilians in this area has lead many to believe that the SLA is trying to empty the area of all Tamils.
