
December fortnight toll of ethnic Tamil civilians – 72 killed, 21 disappeared
During the first fortnight of December, forty one ethnic Tamil refugees were killed in the Sri Lankan military artillery fire towards schools that were converted to refugee camps in Vaharai.
A further 31 ethnic Tamil civilians were killed by the Sri Lankan armed forces and paramilitary groups operated by it in direct face to face killing.
Bodies of four Tamils were found in Polonaruwa district after they were abducted from Batticaloa. A customer and salesman were shot in their shop in Nilaveli Road in Trincomalee. Two Tamils visiting Vavuniya from Nuwareliya were shot and killed. At least another 21 ethnic Tamil civilians were disappeared by the same group. Thirteen civilians disappeared in Jaffna after SLAFs arrests. SLAFs refused to give arrest warrants to the families. This figure does not include the several cases of abductions by the Karuna paramilitary group. The vast majority of the killing and disappearance outside of Vaharai continues to occur in Jaffna which has been blocked out from outside access for more than four months.
