
SLA continues attacks in LTTE areas
The Sri Lankan Army’s (SLA) Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) carried out two claymore attacks in LTTE areas yesterday, 20 July. One attack wounded officials of the Northeast Irrigated Agriculture Project (NEIAP) and the other attack wounded three Tamil Eelam Auxiliary force members.
Three officials of NEIAP and their driver were wounded when their pick-up vehicle hit a claymore planted by the SLA in the LTTE area of Kokupadaiyan, Mannar on Thursday, 20 July around 2.45 pm. The four injured suffered minor injuries and were treated at Murunkan District Hospital. Three Tamil Eelam Auxiliary force members were injured in the LTTE area of Semamadu, Vavuniya by a claymore planted by the SLA on Thursday, 20 July around 11.45 am. The Auxiliary members were on patrol when they were attacked by the claymore. On 26 May the Director of NEIAP was assassinated by GoSL operated forces in Batticaloa and on 10 June two NEIAP employees were attacked by a SLA claymore as they were riding in their vehicle in Vavinya. One of the officials died of severe injuries later. NEIAP conducts agricultural projects to sustain the livelihood of Northeast families and is funded by World Bank. Since the beginning of June the SLA’s DPU has carried out 11 attacks in LTTE areas which killed 21 people.
