TNA Member of Parliament Raviraj shot dead in Colombo

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Member of Parliament (MP) and his body guard were shot today morning in Narahenpitiya in Colombo at 8.45 am. Injured Raviraj and his body guard were taken to the hospital where the two died.

The location of the incident is particularly noteworthy for there are four police installations, a police station, a police motor vehicle registration office, a fuel filling stations for the police and a vehicle service station again just for the police, in the vicinity.

Only yesterday, at the protest meeting organized by TNA in front of the UN Head Office in Colombo, to protest the massacre of refugees in Vaharai the day before, Raviraj spoke loudly in all three languages, Tamil, Sinhala and English, demanding international condemnation for the attack on the Kathiraveli refugee camp that has killed 47 refugees.

Raviraj also recently visited Jaffna and issued reports about the situation condemning the Sri Lankan military interference into civil affairs in Jaffna, especially the distribution of essential items.

Forty four years old Nadarajah Raviraj was born in Chavakachcheri in Jaffna. He is married with two young children. He was educated at the Chavakachcheri Drieberg College and at the Jaffna St John’s College. As well as being a member of parliament he is also a practicing lawyer. He has been a member of parliament for the last five years representing the Tamil electorate.

As a young man in his early twenties he has worked for the well known human rights body in Colombo, the Home for Human Rights. He has actively worked for the release of political prisoners who were held for longtime without trial under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. He has taken up court cases for young people who have been held under this Act.
