SLA claim of finding grenades inside University false – Vice Chancellor
On 18 August Sri Lankan army swamped the Jaffna University complex breaking doors alleging that it is searching. Student leader, T Bageerathan, was arrested.
Following this operation, the Sri Lankan Broadcasting Cooperation, the State news media, stated that the Sri Lankan army recovered 15 grenades in the University. On 20 August, Acting Vice Chancellor for Jaffan University, R Kumaravelu, issued a press release stating that the SLA claim was false. Vice Chancellor said that this false news is intended to reinforce earlier propaganda by the SLA that weapons are being kept hidden inside the University complex. In the press release the Vice Chancellor stated that the SLA damaged the memorial, erected for fallen heroes, inside the University. Vice Chancellor said he is saddened that such acts could enrage the students and provoke them.
