Co-Chair representatives meet with LTTE
Co-Chair representatives in Sri Lanka arrived in Kilinochchi today 10 April 2006 and had a meeting with Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing at the Peace Secretariat.
Norwegian Ambassador Mr.Hans Bratskar, Japanese Ambassador Mr.Akio Suda, EU Commissioner Mr. Julian Wilson and Netherland’s Ambassador Mr. Reynout Van Dijk currently heading the EU in Sri Lanka briefed Mr.Tamilselvan on the outcome of their meetings with the government and encouraged LTTE to attend Geneva talks scheduled for 19 April 2006. Mr.Tamilselvan, while reiterating LTTE’s commitment to the process, said that much remains to be demonstrated by the government to make Geneva II meaningful. The political head traced the sequence of events immediately following Geneva I, very much contrary to what was pledged by the government delegation on 23 February 2006. “Non-implementation of what was pledged notwithstanding, the LTTE was all the more prepared to attend the talks as scheduled, but the government is adamantly laying new conditions for the transport of our eastern commanders to attend the central committee meeting prior to Geneva II and we are awaiting a positive response from the SLMM that would enable us to make a decision” said Mr.Tamilselvan. Elaborating further, Mr.Tamilselvan said that the LTTE has fulfilled its obligations but dismayed over the acceleration of violence against Tamil people in the military occupied areas and the government’s new conditions for the re-entry of LTTE political cadres into military occupied areas and engage in political work that would help to build confidence. “We are only asking for the transport arrangement of our eastern commanders in accordance with the air travel arrangement that was already in existence or as an alternative the sea travel arrangement which too was in force on an agreed formula during the CFA period with the SLMM on board” said Mr.Tamilselvan. “The onus is with the government to act with circumspection at this crucial juncture and not to fall prey to political machinations of extremist elements that are keen to disrupt the process and the international community has a role to play to make Geneva II a reality” emphasised Mr.Tamilselvan in earnest. Tamil Elam Police chief Mr.Nanesan, Mr.Puleedevan, Secretary General of LTTE Peace Secretariat were accmpanied with Mr.Tamilselvan in the meeting.
