15 civilians killed in SLA shelling on church
Fifteen civilians were killed by Sri Lankan army (SLA) artillery shelling on a church in Allaipiddy, Jaffna on the morning of Sunday, 13 August. Twenty civilians were seriously wounded in the attack. The civilians were taking refuge in St Philip Mary Church due to heavy artillery fire in civilian areas of Allaipiddy. SLA restrictions and curfew prevented even medical help from entering Allaipiddy until the urgent request of Jaffna Magistrate Ms Srinithi Nandasegaran allowed a rescue team and medical help through.
Shelling in other areas of Mankumban and Mandaithivu also injured at least 40 civilians.
