LTTE reviews post-Geneva with facilitators

“Inaction in implementation of what was agreed upon in Geneva and hyperbolic rhetoric is all what one sees in the ground when it comes to fulfilment of the pledges made by the government delegation” said Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing in a meeting with the Norwegian Ambassador Mr.Hans Bratskar and the SLMM delegation headed by Mr.Hagrup Haukland, Head of SLMM today Thursday 16 March 2006 at the Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi.

In presenting an overview of the ground situation in the military occupied parts of the NorthEast in the post-Geneva period Mr.Tamilselvan said that it would be a month in another week’s time since the parties to the CFA reiterated and reconfirmed their commitment to the document after two days of deliberations in Geneva and what one sees in the ground is a recurrence of para-military violence, killings, harassments and abductions in the military occupied areas of the NorthEast. “There is a conspicuous absence of action and contradictory rhetorical statements that only tend to aggravate the situation and push back to status-quo December-January which would reverse the progress attained in Geneva” lamented Mr.Tamilselvan.

Submitting written details of violations in the area of para-military activities, Mr.Tamilselvan pointed out that killing and abduction of LTTE members, abduction of children to support falsified claims of “child soldier recruitment” and military and para-military harassments are increasing unabatedly and requested the facilitators and the SLMM to initiate meaningful and result-oriented action to get the government’s pledge in Geneva translated into implementation.

“The understanding reached in Geneva should not be allowed to go into lapse, for it would have serious impacts in the progress of the process and not at all conducive to build confidence and mutual trust between the parties” underscored Mr.Tamilselvan. The Ambassador said that he would convey these concerns to the government in his meeting with its representatives tomorrow.
