
Kilinochchi UN officers briefed on Mutur humanitarian issues
UNICEF Head of Kilinochchi district, Ms Penny Brune, UNHCR Officer in Charge, Mr David and World Food Programme officer, Ms Sukunakumari met with Secretary General of LTTE Peace Secretariat S Puleedevan and INGO Liaison Officer S Thiyagarajah on Monday, 7 August to discuss the serious humanitarian issues of civilians in Mutur East.
 The humanitarian issues of the people in Mutur East were discussed along with the most recent events regarding the Government of Sri Lanka’s (GoSL) continued military strikes that killed 15 civilians in Sampoor area and also prevented the SLMM, villagers of Mavilaru and LTTE officials from opening the water sluice gate. Puleedevan stressed the urgency of addressing the needs of 40,000 civilians who were stranded in the Sampoor and other areas due to the GoSL continued military strikes. He stated that the GoSL is putting up obstacles for aid agencies to travel to the affected areas and no relief or aid workers have visited the areas yet. Civilians are in a state of panic without food or water. Puleedevan stated the need to urge the international community to address the needs of the civilians to prevent this humanitarian disaster from continuing.
