SLA attacks students at Jaffna Technical College
Sri Lankan Army soldiers (SLA) entered school grounds in an armed vehicle and attacked and injured students who were holding memorial celebrations for the second day for Annai Poobathy this morning, 24 March at 10:30am.
Eight female students and Student Union head, Suganthan, were attacked. At least 15 students were attacked in total. SLA also tore down the Tamil Eelam flag, damaged a framed photograph of Annai Poobathy as well as parts of the school building. Students’ cell phones and cameras were seized by the SLA. Tension prevailed in this area, as students began protesting against these attacks. These attacks follow yesterday’s threats made by the SLA during the same memorial event when more than 300 Sri Lankan army soldiers entered Jaffna Technical College’s campus on Thursday, 23 March. The army arrived at 3:00 pm and demanded the students to take down the Tamil Eelam flag, which the students protested. A memorandum issued by the Students Association stated, “Gen. Chandrasiri has to declare war on Jaffna district Tamils if he intends to suppress the students of the Technical College.” Students further stated that they intend to continue with memorial celebrations for one month, in remembrance of Annai Poobathy who held a fast unto death in protest of Sri Lankan military abuse of Tamil civilians.
