SLA excesses on travelers in Jaffna
Sexual harassment by SLASLA personnel on patrol along the streets of Jaffna are sexually harassing young women travelers. SLA methods of sexual harassment ranges from, passing vulgar comments, checking all their personnel belonging. Although the regulation is that females must be examined only by female slodiers, SLA men are examining young woman travelers and are acting indecently towards them.
Road blocks Excessive number of road blocks have been placed along the Jaffna roads by the SLA causing serious travel delay for workers. SLA has placed long trees they have cut down across the roads. The Jaffna District Courts Judge ordered the SLA to remove such road blocks. Yte, so fat the SLA had ignored the orders. Army identity card SLA is also demanding civilians to the identity cards issued by SLA. Large number of civilians who resettled in Jaffna after the 2002 CFA have not been issued this SLA identity cards. These civilians find this demand by the SLA threatening. Too many checking A civilian traveling in Jaffna is forced to stop at three points within 100 metres for checking that involves full body search. For example, a traveler entering Jaffna town through KKS road is stopped at Vannai Sivan Kovil Junction, Muddaskadai Junction, and Sathirathu Junction. What used to be a five minute trip into town has turned into a harrowing 45 minute journet involving three full body checks. Helmet wearers SLA is attacking motorbike riders wearing helmet in Jaffna. This is also causing fear and confusion to the motorbike travelers because the by lay motorbike riders must wear helmet. Parking prohibition Jaffna-Palay road is a busy road with shops along major parts of the road. SLA has ordered that no vehicles, including bicycles can be parked along this road. This effectively prevents shoppers from shopping in these shops. Shop owners are frustrated because their business has come to a stanstill. This is a violation of the right to livelihood of the shop owners. Civilians are also inconvenienced because they must now to go shops further away for their shopping.
