Pannichchankerni bridge to Vaharai under Sri Lankan military artillery attack
Sri Lankan military from Valaichchenai military camp has begun hitting the Pannichchankerni bridge in Vaharai with artillery shells from Wednesday morning. This bridge is an essential part of the A15 highway to Vaharai, the only highway to the 36,000 besieged people in Vaharai. It is therefore a humanitarian link that is now being attacked by the Sri Lankan military with the intention of destroying it.
TNA parliamentarians have appealed to LTTE, SLMM, UNICEF and other humanitarian agencies to save the only humanitarian access to the besieged people. The Co-chairs in their statement yesterday said,
“Citizens are caught in this conflict and agencies are unable to reach them. We recognize the efforts by government to provide essential supplies themselves…..” The Sri Lankan military’s attempt to break the only humanitarian bridge comes in spite of this statement by the Co-chairs.
