Escaped Karuna group member exposes plot to disrupt Geneva talks

Arumugam Vigneswaran (32) was a small scale businessman in Batticaloa until ten months ago. He was enticed into joining the Karuna group ten months ago. Last month he was sent on a mission into LTTE administered area to carry out an attack on senior LTTE leaders. The attack was planned for the last day of Geneva talks on 22nd February. Vigneswaran decided to surrender to the LTTE instead. He told his story at a press conference on Monday 27th February at 11.00 am in Kokkadichcholai. His story is as follows:

Since he joined the Karuna group he has been mostly used to carry out harassment of civilians with the SLA at the Kiran camp.

On February 18th Vigneswaran was called to the Karuna camp in Thivuchchenai. There he was told that he must go into LTTE area and carry out an attack. He was asked in particular to carry out the attack on Lt Janarthanan and Lt Umaram whose locations at that time were known to Karuna group.

He was given three days training and sent with a container of explosives, a shell to be used as a claymore mine, an iron rod digger and wires. He was also given Rs 4000 as payment.

Instructions were also given to Vigneswaran by Capt Banthula at the Kiran SLA camp that on his return Vigneswaran is to use the torchlight to give a signal which will be understood by the SLA men at the Kiran camp.

Karuna group brought Vigneswaran to Oddamavadi and handed him to the paramilitaries there. He was then brought to the checkpoint at Kavaththai. From here Vigneswaran crossed the river and entered LTTE area.

In the last minute Vigneswaran decided to abandon the plan to attack and surrendered to LTTE instead.
