
SLA retaliations in Jaffna
Following grenade attacks on the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) in Irupalai, Thirunelveli, Palamsanthi, Mallakam, and Kulapuddi, the SLA retaliated against civilians.
The SLA opened fire on travelers along Adiyapatham Road following a grenade attack on Friday morning at 11:50 am. Paramananthan Ratheeswaran (21) and A Anushan (21) were traveling on a motorbike when they were hit by bullets. The SLA detained them for some time even though the injured men needed medical attention. Eventually they were released. Another grenade attack occurred in Kokkuvil-Kollapiddi junction on Friday at 11:00 am. The SLA immediately launched a cordon and search operation. No one appears to have been arrested. On Friday at 4:00 pm unidentified gunmen opened fire on soldiers who were on duty in Mallakam. One SLA soldier was killed. The shooting occurred near Visalaachchi School on KKS Road. SLA soldiers retaliated and fired randomly and as a result, the travelers on the street ran in all directions. Tension prevailed in the area for some time. No civilians were reported injured. A grenade attack took place on Jaffna-Point Pedro Road near Iravalai junction on Friday at 4:45pm. The attack was followed by gunfire. Travelers in the area came under the retaliatory attacks of the SLA. Shops were closed and people quickly left the area. Pesalai civilians continue to displace On December 23rd a housing scheme in Pesalai was ravaged by Sri Lankan Navy resulting in four deaths, several injuries, loss due to burning and theft, and psychological trauma as a result of Sri Lankan Navy atrocity. Harassment of Sri Lankan Navy has continued ever since. Since then Pesalai people have continued to displace to other areas. Pesalai which is in Mannar is the closest land area to India. People are fleeing to Rameshwaram in India, by paying thousands of rupees to those who provide the sea transport. Nine people arrived in Rameshwaran on Friday in this continuing displacement. Following threats and harassment from the Sri Lankan Navy, nearly 200 fisherman families have displaced to Vankalai, 20 km off Mannar town.
