Food intended for starving Vaharai people seized by Sinhalese mobs
Government today announced that 10 trucks of food will be leaving at 3.00 pm for Vaharai which would have been a most welcome relief for the starving people. On two occasions prior to this the government promised to send food trucks but was turned back at the Mankerni Sri Lankan military checkpoint.
Today’s convoy of food trucks left Batticaloa for Vaharai and it stopped at the Mankerni checkpoint at 4.00 pm. Immediately some shelling noise was heard. The Sri Lankan military at the Mankerni checkpoint asked the convoy to move back 200 metres. The convoys reversed 200 metres. Again there was shelling noise and the convoy was told to move back again. However, by this time logs were placed behind the convoys so that they could not be reversed. By this time Sinhala mobs swarmed the convoys and the food in the trucks were stolen and taken away by the mobs. Sri Lankan military and paramilitary stood guard as the Sinhala mobs looted the food. None of the trucks were allowed to proceed to Vaharai and they all returned to Batticaloa. Additional Government Agent, Maheson, and Divisional Secretary, Kiritharan, for the Vaharai area went with the convoy and returned to Batticaloa with the convoy.
